Little Rock Arkansas Headshot Photographer: How To Make Picking Headshot Images Easier

Tethered Photography for Your Little Rock Headshot Makes Picking Photos Easier:

At Partridge Lane Studio, I link the camera to a computer so that the photos are immediately available for viewing. Known as tethered photography, this technique makes it easier for the photographer and subject to figure out what is and isn’t working. Then we dial in the best poses and moods. Working together as a team reviewing the photos in real time on a 27 inch monitor instead of a tiny camera screen makes picking the new headshot a lot quicker and easier,.

During a photo session, I may ask my subject to move their head and give smiles that they are not used to giving. One technique is called the turtle, it moves the head toward the camera without moving the shoulders. When the chin is forward and away from the neck you get great chin definition and the eyes appear larger. When the chin is back and up, the eyes look smaller and shows off more of the nostrils.

The key thing to remember when doing this technique is to keep your shoulders back as you bring your chin forward and down. And remember, doing “the turtle” doesn’t have to be limited to your headshot session, you can use this simple posing tip for the rest of your life to look your best in photographs. Tethered photography gives us the ability to flag photos that you like during the session so they are easier to find later when you select your images for retouching. I stop after every three or four shots and review yo see what we have. This allow us pick the photos we like and talk about what we want to change for the next series of images.

Tethered Photography for Your Little Rock Headshot Makes Picking Photos Easier:

When using the tether, we can stop to adjust hair or makeup during the session. We always start with a test shot at the beginning of the session so we can check your makeup and hair on the screen. Any shine or makeup is adjusted and we can look for and adjust any jewelry that maybe hanging slightly off center. I try to catch and tweak as much as possible so we get it right in the camera instead of fixing them later in Photoshop slowing down the delivery of your final images.

Wardrobe is seen more clearly on the screen as well. A blouse or shirt that we thought might work is changed if it doesn’t end up working on the screen. If a shirt is too light for the white background, it is obvious when you get to look at it on a large monitor. You will leave knowing that you have the images that you want. The tether takes the guess work out of it and allows for faster turnaround time, in most case I can get the final images to you by the same afternoon.

•Turtlenecks are almost always a bad idea (since they crowd the face)

•Clothes should be neatly pressed and should look new or like new

•Avoid busy patterns and large lines/stripes

•Blue/green/turquoise shirts/blouses or accents can help emphasize blue/green/hazel eyes

What to Wear – Men

•The standard business look is a suit jacket, dress shirt and tie

•A casual business look is often a jacket and open dress shirt, shirt and tie (no jacket), or dress shirt on it’s own

•Polo shirts are a good look for some businesses. Be sure the shirt is in good condition and fits well

•For a no-jacket casual look, bring colored shirts – ideally darker than your skin tone

•A white dress shirt by itself is a bad idea – unless you plan to wear it underneath something (jacket or sweater)

•Bring a few different jackets, shirt colors and ties so we have choices for the photo

Hair and Makeup Tips

•Make-up should be clean and natural

•Wear a heavy layer of translucent powder – your face will appear flawless in photos. Shine disappears, pores seem smaller, skin looks even, and blush is smoother

•Line lips before applying matte lipstick, then reline. Don’t overdo it. Dip a cotton bud in powder and run along lip line to prevent color from bleeding

•Avoid shimmers or products with lots of sparkle or shine

•Avoid frosts or overly-bright colors

•Don’t get a new hair cut just before the shoot (you may want to let it grow-in a bit or get used to styling a new cut)

•Do not try/use any new product on your hair, face or body the day before or few days before your shoot. In case you have a bad reaction to the product

General Wardrobe Advice From A little Rock Headshot Photogrpaher – Keep it simple!

I have compiled a list of 15 things that you should consider before your headshot session with a Little Rock Arkansas Headshot Photographer. If you have any questions before your session please contact the studio

  1. You’ll want to wear a sharp outfit that makes you look and feel your best. Choose an outfit you would wear to an interview, or a sales pitch meeting, or if you were being interviewed on television.
  2. Darker jackets are traditional for business headshots.
  3. For shirts, wear solids or shirts with non-distracting subtle patterns.
  4. For women, a bright colored shirt/blouse with a dark jacket is a very nice look.
  5. Don’t wear all-white unless it’s underneath another article of clothing.  (Exception:  for women, white jacket + darker shirt underneath)
  6. Avoid very light pastel colors unless they’re combined with dark clothing.
  7. Strong stripes and patterns make a fashion statement and will be noticed – only wear these if it’s your personal style.
  8. Avoid shiny clothing, turtlenecks.
  9. Don’t wear all black – have some color in your outfit.
  10. For inspiration on outfits, take a look at the photos on my Pintrest page portfolio and see what outfits capture your attention!
  11. Bring a few tie options!  This is one of the easiest changes we can make in your session if we need to add variety.
  12. You’ll want to time any hair cuts, coloring, or styling so that you’ll look your best on the day of the photo shoot. You know your hair best! Keep in mind the date of our photo shoot when scheduling your hair appointments.
  13. Your makeup should be light and basic, as if you were going to a nice function. In many cases, less makeup is more classy. Bring your favorite lipstick and some powder if possible.
  14. You should shave on the day of the session. We’ll retouch out any nicks or scratches if they happen to occur that morning. We can’t edit out stubble after the fact, so make sure your facial hair looks just right for the session.
  15. Keep your jewelry simple and classy. We want the focus to be on you! Anything that’s not too loud will work great.
